Our Practice
MHTN believes great Architecture creates memorable and meaningful experiences for people. This idea infuses our office culture and practice ethic.
LISTEN and UNDERSTAND. MHTN’s approach begins with listening, and focused research. We want to understand each client and context so that each design interaction is uniquely responsive.
INSPIRE. Next, we sketch ideas, unleash possibilities, and align opportunities. We draw, discuss, diagram and model to discern and unite behind concepts that inspire. We commit to the resulting common vision.
REFINE and EXECUTE. In lock-step with each client, we refine and execute every detail to its highest level. With builder as teammate, the whole is accomplished, greater than the sum of each part.
MEASURE. Once we have completed a project, we look for trends, opportunities, and improvements. This feeds back into our practice to evolve toward higher performance.
At MHTN Seven Core Values Motivate and Guide Our Actions
01
DESIGN
We view constraints as opportunities for creativity, integrate design excellence in all aspects of our work, and innovate with responsiveness and responsibility.
02
SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
We recognize our connection to the world – its inhabitants and natural environment. We seek regenerating possibilities and evaluate evolving technologies, while operating sustainably. Our motivation is positive human impact.
03
TEAMWORK
We foster unity and collaboration among diverse and holistic project teams, mentor individuals throughout all aspects of the architectural process, while welcoming questions and ideas from all perspectives.
04
TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE
Our curiosity and pursuit of excellence drives us to research and assess new technologies. We implement proactive quality assessment and commit to develop technical expertise.
05
EMPOWERMENT
We continually educate ourselves, mentor leadership with all pursuits, promote from within, and balance our professional and personal lives.
06
RESPECT
We listen to one another, embrace and welcome individual diversity, act with honesty and integrity, as we foster accountability.
07
SERVICE
We build lasting relationships with our clients and communities by anticipating, understanding, and sharing common goals and expectations. Through serving, we create an exceptional professional experience with every project.
Architecture is a very visual and tactile profession. MHTN’s open studio is an incubator for mentoring innovative thought. We position teams for cross-pollination of many specialties under a One Firm philosophy.
Our office, located in the heart of Salt Lake City, is designed around a series of light-filled open collaborative spaces. We thrive on impromptu problem-solving sessions in this team setting, where environments, beauty, and technology are explored together. (It is also a good place to host parties!)
MHTN is committed to cultivating a Culture of Excellence and equity by providing a formal professional development program that enhances performance and growth. Research time is provided to develop expertise. In essence, our goal is to ensure that each person in our firm develops on an individual professional level, along with meeting the overall mission of our practice, and a life in balance.
MHTN has AIA accreditation which enables the firm to provide training programs for national AIA credit. In-house Training Workshops are led by team members throughout the firm to attain a deep cross-section of knowledge, and to develop communication and client-focused skills.
A good way to measure positive work culture is to ask “How do we enjoy each other?”
We like to keep things lively. Activities beyond holiday parties and birthday recognitions are ever-present and ever-evolving in our office. Whether it is hosting a well-respected national practitioner in our break room for a College of Architecture + Planning breakfast with our professional peers, or a self-curated employee art exhibit, we like to change up our day-to-day professional life once in a while.
At MHTN, everyone is encouraged to step forward with community and socially impactful ideas for sponsored activities. It could be as simple as coordinating entries for the Mayor’s Bike to Work Poster Contest, or rounding up support for EECTA’s Box City, University of Utah Community Partners Program, or daily drawing during “Inktober”.
Practicing “Good Deeds, Good Design” through in-kind design services to 501c-3 organizations with small project needs reveals positive traits in ourselves that may not otherwise be seen among office-mates, and fosters professional renewal. MHTN shares this spirit of volunteerism and positive actions towards our fellow humans — that’s also how we enjoy each other.
At MHTN, we work and play around a simple equation –—
people + collaboration + innovation = extraordinary environments.
As our mission indicates, we place people at the center of our work. Our practice nurtures a collaborative environment of diverse experts, because we believe that understanding our clients, coupled with learning and sharing expertise is the best way to create extraordinary environments.
If you are committed to collaboration and creative excellence, we’re always on the lookout for talent. We seek team members who have a passion for architecture, and are self-motivated contributors that will embrace and expand our office culture.
