University of Utah Eccles Student Life Center

The George S. Eccles Student Life Center is designed as a connective building, a lively place of renewal at the campus nexus of academic, recreational, and residential precincts. A fluid sequence of lounges offers a variety of active zones and quiet respites with continuous exterior views, healthy food options, and even a hearth. With dynamic folds, the warm terra cotta and silver-grey metal exterior reflects the surrounding panoramic high desert and lake geology of Utah. The tall glass façade wraps two levels of “see-and-be-seen” activities while adjacent outdoor spaces take advantage of Utah’s four seasons to promote balance, fun and camaraderie, all critical to healthy lifestyles. From the yoga deck to the fire pit, the design strives to offer a seamless transition between inside and outside. There is even an operable wall that creates an expansive indoor/outdoor leisure pool experience.
